Books, like movies, exist both to entertain and to challenge. It is a rare form of media these days that has one walk away from it in a stupor. "Saving Private Ryan" did that to me at the theatre - as I realized that not only are we the first generation to grow up with religion (to paraphrase another Coupland quote), but we are also the first to grow up with a war to define us.
"Girlfriend in a Coma" struck me in almost the same way - that when I finished it, I just strolled around in this sort of daze for fifteen minutes or so while I soaked in what I had just read.
